We're collecting hygiene items! We hope to provide as many families as possible with hygiene kits this spring. Donate through our wish list.

Over the last year or so, you may have seen the lovely pictures of this amazing family on our page, but you may not know their story.

Ahmed Adan, Samira Hirsi and their sons Yosef and Abudl “Aziz” arrived in Atlanta in 2017. Ahmed is a medical professional and worked as a hematologist in Kuwait after fleeing war in Somalia. Ahmed was eager to get to work soon after arrival, and faced the disappointment of starting over in his field with a positive attitude. He worked with New AP employment specialists and was able to secure a job as a Medical Laboratory Technician. Youngest son Aziz was born with cerebral palsy, and in addition to working towards self-sufficiency, the family had to navigate the oftentimes complicated U.S. medical system to ensure Aziz received all the services and care he needs to thrive.

The New AP Intensive Case Management team helped the family navigate through referrals and appointments, but Aziz and his parents demonstrated their determination through the whole process. Both boys are now in middle school and are doing well. The family is on track to apply for citizenship in 2022. This family has faced the challenges that come with resettlement with optimism and resiliency and have accomplished great things in their first few years here, and we can't wait to see the successes they find in the future!

New American Pathways is immensely grateful for the donation of 50 boxes of assorted personal protective equipment donated to us from @fodacorg ! Because of their generous donation, we are able to provide New AP staff and clients with 3ply face masks, KN95 masks, and an array of differently-sized hand sanitizer to protect us and enable us to do our part in limiting the spread of COVID-19, while supporting Atlanta's refugee and immigrant community. We also want to thank the members of the Rotary Club of Stone Mountain for making this partnership happen.

For this year's New Americans Celebration, we are taking action for New American Civic Engagement and celebrating new citizens, like Khadija! Originally from Afghanistan, Khadija Barati and her two daughters resettled in Atlanta through the Special Immigrant Visa program in 2014. Congress created the Afghan SIV program in 2009 to enable Afghan citizens who worked beside U.S. troops to immigrate to safety in America. “Becoming a United States Citizen was important to me because I wanted to feel like I belong in America,” Khadija shared. “I served with the American military for over four years in Afghanistan because I believe in human rights. I was concerned about the situation with women’s rights in Afghanistan and wanted to make a difference. I am grateful for the opportunity, especially for my daughters, as I wanted them to have a better future and have the opportunity for an education.”

“This year my oldest daughter and I became United States Citizens. For me, becoming a citizen was important so I would have the right to vote and participate in a greater way. As we studied for the citizenship exam, I learned so much about the United States and our history. I worked so hard and studied a lot so I could pass the test. As I learned about America, I learned how the country was built by refugees and immigrants. Years ago, people came here looking for a better life, much like my family did. I hope that before people judge, they build their knowledge on how and why refugees come to America.”

President Joe Biden announced he will sign an executive order today pertaining to refugee resettlement, including setting the refugee ceiling to 125,000 next fiscal year and committing to rebuild the capacity to process refugee resettlement applications at overseas processing centers. New American Pathways is excited to partner with the Biden Administration to rebuild the refugee resettlement program and support a more welcoming and supportive environment for immigrants in the United States.
