Breaking Ground with Breaking Bread

What would we do without our dedicated volunteers?

In just six months, New American Pathways recruited 311 volunteers who donated 4,476 hours of service – to set up apartments for incoming refugee families, teach English, tutor children in school, mentor adults seeking employment – the list of services is long.

On April 14, 2015, during National Volunteer Week, New American Pathways hosted our first Breaking Bread Together luncheon as a celebration of our volunteers. This year the spotlight was on the Young Women’s Leadership (YWL) program that engages 20 high school girls each year to develop the skills and knowledge they need to build healthy relationships, make safe and responsible decisions, and prepare for high school graduation and long-tern economic self-sufficiency. We honored their volunteer mentors with flowers. Attendees also had the opportunity to purchase jewelry made by the young women in the program to support their scholarship fund.

We have ample volunteering opportunities in other programs as well, both with direct and indirect services. Priority needs include:

  • Volunteers to help with voter registration
  • Grocery Shoppers to help with shopping at ethnic stores and filling the fridge before a new arrival
  • Family Match tutors and Family-to-Family Match, where a volunteer family is matched with a refugee family, adults helping adults and kids helping kids

Please get in touch if you are interested in getting involved!

A huge THANK YOU to all of the sponsors, volunteers and other attendees for making Breaking Bread Together possible and so incredibly successful.

Sponsors included: Macy’s, Adriana Varela, Barnwell Consulting, Thompson and Olga Rawls, and Leola Reis. Props also to the Clarkston High School Culinary Arts Team for serving a spectacular southern meal!
