Bee Nguyen: Our 2019 Friend of Freedom Honoree

At Red, White and NEW on August 17, 2019, New American Pathways will honor Bee Nguyen, the representative for Georgia House District 89 that includes City of Atlanta and DeKalb County.

As the daughter of former refugees from Vietnam, Bee Nguyen cherishes the community’s most diverse voices. She spent a decade empowering girls through Athena’s Warehouse, the nonprofit she started to support under-resourced high schools in Atlanta.  She recently joined New American Leaders as their National Policy Director, where she works on immigration and democracy reform.

In her capacity as a lawmaker, Bee advocates for reforms to the immigration and criminal legal systems. She introduced legislation to place restrictions on the use of solitary confinement.  She also authored a public safety bill that will allow people without citizenship to obtain a driver’s card.  In 2018, she co-chaired City of Atlanta’s committee on immigrant detention. Under the committee’s guidance, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms ended City of Atlanta’s contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

She graduated from the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies with a Master of Public Administration in 2012.

We are proud to honor her at Red, White and NEW as our 2019 Friend of Freedom.
